Veterinary desert = Veterinary Care Accessibility Score (VCAS) ≤ 20 (least-accessible band). VCAS is a county composite of veterinary employee supply, poverty, income, vehicle access, and English proficiency.

Human medical desert = county contains a designated Primary Care Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA); "whole" = entire-county geographic shortage.
